Introduction

In our Science of Living books, we have often talked on a number of subjects, including natural virtues, which are inherent in man, or which he has developed with the passing of time.

Many of these virtues come natural. Others are part of his survival instinct. And a number of these have been imposed upon him, as a matter of discipline in order to keep the peace in society, the tribe, and the community. The 10 Commandments can be a very powerful and proper example of the rules and regulations which need to be implemented upon mankind, because without them, he would not be any less than any savage beast.
Along with this, there were natural virtues, which were acknowledged and accepted by human beings as belonging to a person who did good unto others, who was kind, gentle, caring, loving, cherishing, and thus gained the love, affection, respect, and regard of the people around him.

Sensitivity is one of these virtues, even though we do not talk much about it. We think we have it. But do you really have generosity of soul and kindness of spirit? Do you go out of your way to be cruel to somebody, just to have something with which to amuse yourself and to amuse the general public around you? Do you enjoy saying something, supposedly in fun, in order to hurt somebody, which in return supposedly makes you feel happy?

Whether you have a sensitive soul or you do not, is going to depend on your nature and also your upbringing. If since childhood, you have been taught that it is right and proper to laugh at others, ridicule them, pull them down, look for ulterior motives in even the smallest kind gesture, well, nobody has taught you to be sensitive and to think about how your actions and your speech can affect others.
