Mankind has made it to the stars, in no small part due to the discovery, and exploitation of a blue crystal called Dashon. And the only source of it is the man known as the Crystal Commissar, Kelen Roaert. He controls the flow of Dashon to the colonies, and has the only known, reliable source of the mineral, all of which has made him, in the opinion of those that know, the richest man in the colonies. And there seems to be no end in sight.
Until one day, a prospector named Tim Baler finds an asteroid of the mineral crystal, far away from the inner colonies, richer than anything yet found, or produced, anywhere. But Kelen's reputation for dealing with competition harshly, and the fact that he is unfamiliar with the form these crystals are in, force him to seek allies on a distant and lawless world.
