The Adventures of Neptune King is the third book in the series. Shark, still pining over his breakup with Valerie meets and befriends 16 year old Vessa Kelly, driven from home by her mother’s occupation. While helping Vessa, he soon forgets about his own troubles, and then, when her prostitute mother is accused of murdering a client he enlists Neptune’s aid to prove her innocence. The jealous and vindictive Inspector Thiel makes a reappearance and jumps to the obvious conclusion by arresting Mrs Kelly, and trying summon up false charges against Shark, just for the hell of it. In The Case of the Russian Jewels, Shark has to face his prejudices when he bodyguards Nigel and Bruce, a pair of homosexuals who rather fancy him. They are being threatened by someone trying to drive them out of their house. It doesn’t take Neptune long to figure out the motive behind the threats and with Shark sets a trap to catch the thieves bent on retrieving stolen rubies. They do not realize it at the time, but they have come to the attention of an infamous international thief called The Shadow. In The Case of the African star, they once again thwart The Shadow when he tries to steal a rare yellow diamond from the British Museum. A week later Neptune receives a chilling threat that turns his life upside down. The Shadows Revenge, deals with Neptune’s life of hell as first Shark is badly beaten and an attempt is made to kidnap Rachel. Neptune’s anxiety mounts as time passes until the Shadow makes his final move. He rings Neptune and reminds him that while he has been busy protecting his friends, he has forgotten about his family. They split up, while Shark hurries off to collect Neptune’s sister Neptune rushes to warn his brother-in-law, only to become a horrified witness as John Griffith is run over and critically injured by a speeding car. Shark reaches the heavily pregnant Mermaid, but not quick enough to get her to safety. Outnumbered he fights with the intruders bent on kidnapping her only to be knocked out from behind. Can Neptune trust the Shadow who has a well-documented history of senseless murder? Will he be able to find Shark and Mermaid before they’re killed? The climax of this book will have you on the edge of your seat.
