Following a life as a single mother raising a teen-aged son in the suburbs while working in a dental clinic, Fiona wanted to change her life after her father passed away, her mother remarried and her son opted to go live with his father then enter college. By giving up her routine job to become a live-in caretaker of three small old apartment buildings in the center of Vancouver, she sought work and study at home on her own terms, but her life is cold, lonely and drab.
One day, however, the body of a young man related to a high-profile corporate executive, George Simmons, turns up in a junk pile behind one of the buildings and Fiona’s life suddenly changes. While cleaning up the grounds, she stumbles upon what could be the murder weapon and is herself swept into the mystery. The suspense builds as police interrogate, the media dogs her, and strangers lurk. A camera full of photographs of the investigation including the supposed murder weapon goes missing and Fiona is threatened. The press reveals a history of conflict and intrigue between the family that owns the building, the South Asian-Canadian Johals, and the development corporation that the Simmons head. The incident fuels the fire of a housing controversy.
In the course of these developments, Fiona’s like takes a positive turn. She finds romantic interest in a new friend, a free-lance photographer working on the case. She is reconnected with her mother and son because of the media’s attention. She takes step to finalize her divorce and get on a career track.
