Jeff and Carl understand that their best hope to win the war with Salchesia is to find a strong ally. Yes, they won the first battle, but a battle against only a small fraction of the Salchek Army of Invasion. There is only one nation that is strong enough to be an effective ally—Zomar. Joining a caravan headed to Hochberg, a seaport town on the west coast, the men fight their way through an attack in the mountains and arrive in Hochberg where they are forced to rebuild an old schooner, The Gilnora, as the only ship capable of an ocean voyage. Nearly destroyed in an attack by Salchek agents in Hochberg, the Gilnora finally sets sail and enters the Great Northern Ocean. As captain, Jeff is overwhelmed by his inexperience and the responsibility of sailing an untried ship on an alien ocean. The crew of the Gilnora believe monsters inhabit the Great Northern Ocean and are said to destroy all who venture far from land. And why shouldn’t there be monsters of the deep? This isn’t Earth.
The trip south is beset with challenges from the start. Major storms, a stowaway, and maybe, Carl thinks, haunting voices singing of a night far out at sea. The men soon learn that Aketti’s oceans and marine life bear little resemblance to Earth’s. It seems likely there was no big asteroid strike similar to that on Earth. And then, blown far south by a storm, it happens. Diving deep, they rescue a mother and a daughter. It requires days then weeks to comprehend what they have discovered far out in the oceans of Aketti: an amphibious race of intelligent beings, the Pelohahani, and life is changed forever.
Recalling their mission with some difficulty, the men sail to Al Harad, capital of Zomar, and become embroiled in a web of intrigue, attempted assassination, and civil war. Who to trust? Which faction is not solely interested in using them to gain or maintain power?
Fighting for their lives, trying to stay on their feet, the men risk everything and nearly lose it all.
