Smile by Raina Telgemeir | Digest & Review

Raina Telgemeier is the author of the #1 New York Times Best Seller “Smile”. Her striking memoir “Smile” started as an episodic internet comic and is now available from GRAPHIX imprint by Scholastic. The book is the factual story of Riana’s own persistent dental work, but it rapidly develops in to something more than that. Though, certainly not being just a simile for difficult teenage years, Riana conveys a great adolescence story that is conversant and emotionally resounding and never gazes away from the gracelessness and rough moments that so frequently stay in our thoughts. It’s a story of growing up, the experience of making and losing friends and finding one’s true identity. All happening due to repeated dentist visits. Raina just wishes to be a typical sixth grader. But an accident happens one night while returning from a Girl Scouts meeting. On her way home, Riana trips and falls, rigorously losing her two front teeth. After that night follows a five year journey involving extensive and infuriating battle with braces, surgical treatments, humiliating headgear, and even wearing fake teeth. And in spite of all that trouble there’s still more to it, like confusion with a boy, an earth quake, and friends who don’t stay friendly for a long time.
