Discover the York that tourists rarely see!

In 'Secret York' you meet a monk with a taste for the high life, discover the world's largest garden folly, learn about the disadvantages of being an Archbishop 500 years ago, find out who really did ride from London to York in a day and encounter a ghost with a passion for the Paso Doble.

The city`s everyday buildings are revealed in a new light. A dingy car-park here, a decrepit warehouse there; all are shown to have a story just as fascinating as the floodlit mediaeval ruins standing amid manicured lawns. And could that neighbourhood supermarket really once have been the city`s most sophisticated night-spot?

For ease of reference 'Secret York' is split into seven sections: six Routes into the city and a Central Area. The great beauty of York is that it is so compact. You can walk from one extremity to another in less than an hour. Within the walls, no site is more than 20 minutes walk from another.

'Secret York' includes detailed maps for successful walks. The maps have been specially drawn for this book by Paul Eldred. You can view the maps in more detail by looking at: SECRET YORK maps with the lid off Review, expertreviewer.co.uk

The illustrations are by former York artist, Jim Park, whose distinctive style always imparts an air of mystery to the scenes he depicts. Zoë Hall made and drew the Mystery Objects.

Les Pierce was born in Leeds but has lived in York over 20 years. His interests are music and photography. He loves going to Italy. Now retired from the Castle Museum in York he spends most of his time showing visitors from all over the globe around his beautiful city and beyond.
