During the American Civil War, Felicity Wentworth, a New York heiress, tries to prove to her abolitionist father that she cares about more than balls. Determined to rescue the children of an escaped slave, she steals away behind enemy lines to Charleston. Once there she discovers the ravages of war have taken their tole on the city.
