Margaret Lewis is a suffregette and teacher from the North who came South to run the Freed Negroes' Orphanage and Boarding School. She would do anything for the children in her charge, including trying to change the mind of Thomas Blackstone, a wealthy Charleston businessman who is about to forclose on her school. After trying unsuccesfully to reach him through normal channels, Margaret is forced to kidnap Thomas. She thinks that certainly his heart will soften once he sees the children.

Thomas Blackstone is awakened by a gun in his ribs after falling asleep at his office. It isn't until she has him close to the river that Thomas realizes his captor is a woman. She seems to blame him for something, but he doesn't know what.

They aren't on the skiff Margaret brought long before a squall makes the boat hard to control. Despite her trepidation, Margaret unties Thomas when the skiff starts taking on water. As he is sailing toward shore, a wave knocks Margaret overboard and Thomas jumps into the water after her. When he is close to giving up finding her, a voice, one that he could swear was the pirate, Gentleman Jack Blackstone, tells him to reach out. Thomas does and his hands touches Margaret.

On shore, Thomas realizes they are close to his families plantation and they take shelter in the cabin of a long dead Indian friend of the family.

As the storm rages outside, Thomas learns of the reasons Margaret kidnapped him. He did not realize the property he'd decided to build a mill on was now a school. Now that he does, he also realizes he can not take the school away from the children. But it isn't until the next day when they make their way to his parent's plantation, that Thomas reveals this, as well as his feelings for Margaret. Margaret too has fallen in love with Thomas. Thomas' nieces and nephews each give up a toy and foodstuffs are gathered for Thomas and Margaret to take to the orphanage so that the children can have a Christmas miracle.

As Thomas and Margaret make love, he proposes, and after being assured she can continue working with the children, Margaret accepts. As they drift off to sleep, Thomas again hears the voice of his ancestor, the pirate.
