Despite his hopeful ideals for the future of the empire, Sagara remains troubled by his past. With Kotetsu's support, the two visit the home of one of Sagara's former students, Seitarou, hoping to learn what became of him and what may be driving the vengeful Shikyou Kawase to pursue the roshi band. It turns out both Sagara and Kotetsu have a history with Seitarou Miyasaka! Meanwhile, the Satsuma clan takes advantage of Sagara's absence to launch a violent assault, undermining all of the roshi captain's careful diplomatic plans. When the flames are extinguished and the ash settles, the Sagara's fire seems to go out with it. Perhaps through Kotetsu, Sagara can glimpse the future Japan and regain his hopeful outlook, even as his own path darkens...
