Rwanda 1994. A Witness to Genocide

Log-Line: An ex Army Officer returns to Rwanda with his wife in present day, and his memory takes him back to the violent days he spent with the UN peacekeeping forces; how he endeavored everyday to save as many lives as he could, during the bloodiest man-made disaster of history; the Rwandan genocide of 1994; which took the lives of 1 million people in 100 days, and how he watched helplessly, as all his efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice were swept under the carpet.
Act I:
In the first act, we introduce the events that triggered the horrific genocidal events described in ACT II. We introduce our protagonist as a middle aged man, returning to the scene of the horrific acts, that he observed as an intelligence officer in the UN peacekeeping force in Rwanda.
It’s 2011. A middle aged man arrives in RWANDA with his wife. The veneer of calmness and beauty of the country is enough to trigger an inexorable wave of gory thoughts from his past. The scenes cut to the year 1994, and the vespertine skyline explodes in a ball of fire as a plane, carrying the President of Rwanda, spirals out of control. A vicious blame game begins between the two main races, HUTUS and TUTSIS. Each one wants to use this opportunity to reign over the other.
ACT II:
The ACT II takes on from ACT I, and describes the gruesome acts committed against innocent people, from the viewpoint of our protagonist, who we introduce as a young man serving with the UN peacekeeping team as Intelligence Officer of the Force Commander.
Following the attack, the nation tumbles into darkness as mainly TUTSIS but also HUTUS are slaughtered in the name of retribution. As the violence amplifies, our young protagonist wades his way through the stifling UN protocols and international sanctions to save the people he knows, with help from trusted friends. He takes it upon himself to save innocent people from this horror, and decides to create fake IDs, which places him at great peril, and allows people facing imminent death to escape to Nairobi (Kenya) to refugee centers. He tries to do his best, but is tied down by the rules of engagement that apply to the UN forces, as he battles to save people.
ACT III:
This is the final act describing the legal battles to bring the perpetrators to justice and how it was swept under the carpet.
In the midst of this chaos, we introduce Georges Rutagunda and how he saved the lives of many TUTSIS. The middle aged protagonist explains to his wife about the innocence of Georges, Georges being wrongly implicated, and how he realized that the RPF (Pro TUTSI) was behind the attack on the president’s plane and also the killing of many innocents in Rwanda. He then goes onto describe his legal battle to bring out the truth with Mike Hourrigan (ICTR Investigation team), and how everything was swept under the carpet, to protect the perpetrators. The script ends as we show the man standing in front of his friend’s grave, thinking about the times they spent together.
Why this script?
This story describes the happenings in Rwanda from the viewpoint of an intelligence officer, who was placed in the middle of the bloody conflict. This story presents an alternate narration to Paul Rusebagina’s narrative in ‘Hotel Rwanda’, and offers another view on the genocidal war in Rwanda that took millions of innocent lives.
