Ted Stoddard lost his young wife to cancer twenty years ago. He never thought another woman would catch his eye until Hillary Hansen moved to town. He joined the local track club where she was a member. The club president assigned Hillary as Ted's trainer. As they run together on training runs and local road races his affection for Hillary grows. He despairs because of their age difference, him being 59 and her being 28.
Hillary reminds him of a couple of Biblical examples of couples with the man much older than the woman. Ted is on the verge of telling Hillary he loves her when she comes down with the H1N1 flu. Fearing she might not recover he utters to her unconscious form that he loves her. She recovers and ducks his question of whether she knew what he was saying while she was in the drug induced sleep. Finally, he gets the nerve to tell her he loves her and she tells him she loves him too and admits she heard him say those wonderful words of "I love you."
