In 1851, two boys, orphans from Maine and Alabama, set sail on the world’s oceans. Over nearly a decade, they will become shrewd global traders and fractious partners for life. At home, one has left a sister, the other a childhood slave. Both girls will grow into fierce, independent women dedicated to suffrage and emancipation as they fall in love, choose to marry and bear children with these young men. But love and family are no match for the schism of North and South, when American Slavery and the Declaration of Independence’s founding ideal - ‘all men are created equal’ - must be reconciled.
