After being bushwhacked and nearly killed by two paid shooters, each with a $20 gold piece, the mysterious rider known only as Mr. Smith learns that a fancy Dude from the East, Owner of the Silver Spur Saloon in the town of Apache Trail, has put a price on his head. Not knowing why, and wanting to find out, Mr. Smith sets out for Apache Trail to find the Eastern Dandy, and squeeze him for answers. But Apache Trail - that once dusty hole of a town in the middle of nowhere - has its own secrets. Now that the Railroad is nearby, and mining and lumber have made the town boom again, there are forces in motion that involve millions of acres of land, including Indian lands, and the Legendary Devil's Canyon which supposedly leads through Spirit Mountain to the long-lost Apache gold. Meanwhile, the Eastern Money Syndicate is mounting its own forces to take over the railroad, and the town, and the land, the mining, the lumber - and Spirit Mountain. These are two growing forces heading for each other. And Mr. Smith is smack in the middle of it. But why is Mr. Smith so important? Why would someone want him dead? Intertwined within this story is the tale of a young man, some 30 years later, his mysterious past and reappearance at the mouth of Devil's Canyon, and the equally mysterious Old Indian who befriends him. Now, some years later, the Young Man returns, and he and the Old Indian embark on a trek to Spirit Mountain, and through Devil's Canyon. Each has his own secrets, and reasons – and each of them is directly tied to, and with, the events that happened to Mr. Smith. Seeking answers, all roads lead into Devil's Canyon, through Apache gold, and into Spirit Mountain. That sacred place, guarded – so the story goes – by the ghostly Riders on the Wind.
