Rambulations of Andreas the Bum

Reading Rambulations of Andreas the Bum has been described by it's hard-copy readers as taking a trip somewhere between Kerouac and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It is a "journey tale", set in the Greek Aegean islands written as a journal by Andy Alytis. Andy is a third generation Greek-American from a southern,military family. He is writing to, Madeleine, his boyhood tutor, a Greek-Turkish woman, a decade older than him, with whom he had fallen in love at the age of ten.
Andy's father had been stationed in the Aegean city of Izmir. Andy's job was a brief painful enrollment in a Turkish public school. His parents had finally relented, found him a correspondence course. His father engages Andy a sultry, dark-eyed tutor who introduces him to Homer's Odyssey and his fondest memories are of Madeleine sitting close to help him read the tale in Greek.
Twenty years later, when his father dies, it leaves Andy in a drunken, existential crisis and by a long, circuitous journey, he finds himself back in the Aegean. Once there he often wonders if he should try to seek out his boyhood ideal.
In addressing his journal to Madeleine, Andy recalls their time reading the wonder stories of Odysseus, while trying to impress her with dark, haunted tales of confrontations with the ghosts, nature spirits of ancient Greece and human monsters that he's encountered living in the islands. As the journal progresses, and Andy discovers memories long buried, his stories evolve from graphic novel tales, to the truly inexplicable. The first tale, "Coffin Wood" describes the consequences of consulting the Ouija board on a table buil t of discarded coffins. The second tale, Barba Yiannis~Uncle Blood-sucker" relates Andy's brief, but close call in a romance with Chyssoula, the island girl whose uncle has turned into a Greek vampire. And there are three more, plus a final epiphany that knocks the way Andy sees the world, forever, into a cocked hat.
