On the auspicious occassion of Sri Rama’s birth, devotees fast throughout the day till sunset and remember Sri Rama, by chanting His holy names or hearing from the Ramayana. Some of the temples perform Kalyanotsava for Sita and Rama and many other temples take the Deities of Sita and Rama in a procession. Another highlight of the day is the prasadam distributed:Panakam (a sweet drink prepared with jaggery and pepper), Buttermilk and Kosambari (a salad made from urad dhal, cucumber, coconut, green chillies).
