Oroonoko

In 1663 Aphra visited an English sugar-plantation near the Surinam river, where, according to her, she had a long talk with a black-skinned noble-born slave, whose story eventually became a basis for her novel Oroonoko, or the Royal Slave. The main character of this work, that developed a gallant novel, is prince Oroonoko who travels to the New World in search of the love of his life, Imoinda, sold to slavery, and for the sake of love, he becomes a slave as well…
