Lanie Strickland was sixteen in 1956, and for a while the year seemed magical.

Shy and unsure of herself, Lanie is dazzled when Alex Thurlow asks her to dance at a New Year’s Eve party. Alex is one of the most popular boys in her high school, a star athlete who is as fast with girls as he is on the football field. She never thought a boy like Alex would even notice her. She is in love for the first time, never dreaming that she could be so happy. It isn’t long before they are going steady, much to her social-climbing mother's delight.

Lanie believes Alex when he tells her that he loves her, but his actions say something else, just as the Stricklands’ presence on Giffort Street suggests that they have money when they can barely afford to live there. When Lanie discovers she has a problem which seems impossible to solve, she discovers that she can trust no one but herself.
