Charlotte Butler, better known as Charlie, has devoted her life to the care of marine mammals. When her best friend and mentor Maggie, shows up dead in the Orca lagoon of the Rainbow Beach Marine Center where they both work, she is devastated. Maggie had been a very vocal supporter of whales in captivity. She had felt so strongly that she had written a book called 'Black and White' and had been touring the country talking about her convictions. After her death, Charlie reluctantly takes up where Maggie left off, out of a sense of obligation. Even though she has always been 'on the fence' on the issue, she deosn't realize that being on tour, interacting with the public might change her life or end it.
