My Friend the Felon is based on two gripping events which took place simultaneously. Cub reporter Mick Jett's fun-loving friend, Jimmy Bray, faces a challenge from his vivacious and taunting girlfriend to become a wealthier and more ambitious thief. Jimmy decides to change his specialty from auto theft to bank robbery and hostage taking. Meanwhile, Mick's first cousin, Bobbie Jett, desperately seeks to locate her baby daughter, who was fathered by the recently deceased country singer Hank Williams Sr. and cast into anonymity by a family member to prevent the child from receiving a huge inheritance. In a twist reminiscent of a Dickens novel, Bobbie's daughter was placed in a foster home with instructions to the foster parents not to pry into her history.
