Mark was a year ahead of me in college and we both swam on the swimming team. I was nineteen and a sophomore. He was a junior, but I think he was older than most other juniors because he’d failed at least one year. But his parents were rich and donated a lot of money to the school, so he was never kicked out.

I had known since school that I was gay. Whenever I masturbated, I thought about guys in my class, and when I looked at pictures on the internet, I always looked at the guys, never the women. But I'd never acted upon it, I was afraid, and I never had a strong sense of "gaydar" to tell who I might be able to approach.
Taking a shower after swimming practice was always hard. First of all, I enjoyed looking at the naked guys in the showers. But at the same time, I did now want to make it too obvious that I was looking at them in that way. I didn’t want anyone to know I was gay.
