“I... I want to try something.” she started. He stared at her, but she could feel a small amount of the tension in his arm fade.
“Oh?” he asked, turning to face her.
“Please, please sit down,” she stammered, patting the seat next to her. He waited, then made up his mind and sat next to her.
“I know that the past few weeks haven’t been great,” she said, “but I want to be with you.”
“I’m not sure that we’re meant for each other.” She closed her eyes and pulled her fists into her lap, fighting back the pain those words caused her. Why had she said that about his parents?
“Please listen,” she said, not opening her eyes. She heard him sigh deeply. “Alright.” he said in a tight voice.
“There’s something I’ve never shared with anyone. That’s why this is so hard.” She opened her eyes and looked at him. He waited, maybe not patiently, but he said nothing. She took a deep breath and said, “I want.. no, I need someone to...” she stopped and stared into his eyes. She had to take the plunge. She was going to lose him anyway, right?
“I need someone to...to take control. In bed.”
“What are you talking about? Now you’re saying it’s my fault, that I’m no good in bed?” he lashed out at her.
“No. No, I mean- That it is to say...” She look him straight in the eyes, took a deep breath and took the plunge. “I need someone who can control me sexually. Who can punish me. In bed. When I need it.” She let it all out, in a rush, letting out all of her breath. She felt both relieved and deflated. She stared at him.
He sat there, not moving, not making a sound. His eyes searched her face. What was he thinking?! a voice screamed in her head.
Finally, he leaned forward and put his hand on her knee. “And you want that someone to be me?” he asked in a voice so gentle it shocked her. All she could do was nod. He pulled her toward him and set her down on his lap. All of the tension, all of his anger had vanished. He pulled her head down onto his shoulder.
“Have you ever been with anyone who hurt you?” he asked in soft voice. She tried to answer him and started to cry. Big, fat, wet tears began to roll down her face. He pulled her face down into the crook of his neck and wrapped his arm around her as she sobbed quietly.
“Well, that's over. He won’t hurt you now.” he said, with an air of finality. Was that anger creeping back into his voice? Who was he angry at? He let her cry it out a bit, then pulled her up so that she was facing him. He wiped away her tears with his big hands. He kissed her on the mouth, gently.
“Do you want to tell me? Or do you want to wait?” he asked, his voice a well of patience. She nodded, not able to speak yet. She got up to clean herself up. After a few minutes, she came back, a little calmer. She sat down next to him, so that their knees touched.
“I found out when I was younger that I liked being tied up,” she told him, looking at her hands, still recovering from the sobs. “I fantasize a lot. I think about different things being done to me.” She looked up at him.
“You can tell me,” he grinned at her. “There isn’t much we haven’t tried together already.” he laughed. That broke the tension and made her laugh too. He was right: they had tried a lot of different positions and techniques!
