‘I seen most things in my time. Once gutted a cougar with four sets of testicles, watched lightning put fire on a moose’s horns. One time held a squaw woman the size of a mushroom in my palm whilst crossing a raging river on a bed of feathers. Had pearls and oysters brought me by a mermaid from the deep, I seen the sun come up at night and watched stars battle with the moon. I heard music played by a tree stump and noted a grizzly bear dance to the tune. Lord, I’ve known all kinds of strange and wonderful things. But I never, never in my life, seen a critter so goddamned awful ugly or downright weird as that thing there.’

Misty Blue heads back to the woods for some peace and tranquility on his journey home but all he finds amongst the soft valleys, high mountains and timberland is an unholy trip into the jaws of an evil more perilous than hell itself.
There’s something mysterious going on along the mountain trail from Calumet Crossing and before long Misty is drawn into an ugly confrontation with the monstrous presence that lurks in the forest. On the way he falls into the warm embrace of a statuesque blond and comes up against two backwoods brothers on a revolutionary mission. With a whole band of renegades under the command of a crazed ex-Confederate and a river in flood, there’s hardly a moment for peace and tranquility.
Might be there’s some silver lining lying along that rainy trail but a whole lot of blood flows freely in its wake.
