This is the story of two sisters whose lives undergo a total metamorphosis over a twelve month period when a secret covenant to their father’s will is made known to them six months after his death.

Grace, the main character, is long suffering as a result of a difficult marriage. Left alone in her early forties to bring up her two teenage children when her musician husband flees the family home, she is faced with the challenge of starting life again as a single woman. The deep recession gripping the country sees her hours cut initially, then, leaves her unemployed. Wracked with insecurities, she embarks on a colossal journey of rediscovery and, with the help of her father’s inheritance, the unfailing support of her best friend and the encouragement of her sister, she chases a childhood dream, unearthing a talent which catapults her into the good life.

Kate, her free spirited sister lives an alternative, bohemian life style with her like-minded husband and is fundamentally happy with life, apart from the vacuous hole created by their inability to have children. Desperate to have a baby, the surprise inheritance enables her to go down the route of foreign adoption, which proves to be an emotional roller-coaster and one she is not always certain she can weather. She too garners strength from the women in her life who carry her through the darkness of the Russian courts, once she encounters Baby Lidiya in a bleak and characterless orphanage on the outskirts of Moscow.

Becky, Grace’s long-standing best friend, is the quintessential ‘girl-about-town’, enjoying the frenetic life style that goes along with her job as an editor for a major women’s magazine. Her love of the high life and all things materialistic, make her and Kate polar opposites, but their shared love for Grace draws them in to an unlikely friendship, which is often fraught with tension due to their vastly differing views on life, providing the reader with the, at times, explosive, but often, comical dynamics of their relationship. Becky also undergoes a metamorphosis - witnessing the changes in the lives of her two friends, she is inspired by their courage, and takes stock of her own life, transforming her world accordingly.
