She was raised on a ranch herself and watched as her mother, who bore seven children, age faster than her years. When she died at forty she looked like she was sixty, and moved like she was ninety and Phoebe wanted more than the ranch life had to offer for her.
Phoebe was vulnerable when she fell under the spell of the dashing man who seduced her. She didn’t feel right about leaving Bill and the children, but with Walter she was experiencing things that she had only dreamed of.
