Louis Armstrong was and is one of the most famous names in Jazz music and in his later years he was known as much an entertainer and celebrity as a trumpet master and singer. For more than the last two decades of his life he led his All Stars band in which many of the outstanding players of the era supported him on stage and in the recording studio. The style has been described as ‘Progressive Dixieland’ but that does not do justice to the wide range of styles in the repertoire, from Tiger Rag to The What a Wonderful World. Much has been written about Louis but this book pays particular attention to the band and provides a comprehensive timeline of its activities as well as short biographies of every musician who was a member of the All Stars. Mike Forbes is a lifelong devotee of Louis and particularly of the All Stars.
