The prologue and epilogue describe how the Neolithic chieftain, Gunnr, is poisoned and buried with all his valuable possessions, his three wives, his gold cup, his holy vessel and his sword, later to be pillaged by his successor, Pegl. The story itself concerns the often eccentric inhabitants of Elmcombe (the village where the Stone Age barrow is situated) and the discovery of the artifacts. Meanwhile the initial discoverer of the cup assists and is attracted to the young archaeologist who leads the dig, despite the unwanted and unintended help/hindrance of his friends, neighbors and canine pet. The tone of the story is intentionally light (and hopefully humorous).
