“How much do you want this promotion, Sally?” I suddenly changed gears deliberately to catch her off guard. “For that matter,” I continued. “How much do you want to keep your job? I mean, there’s a lot of dead-end zero hours contracts out there!”
Her beautiful eyes filled with tears. “Oh God! So much! I’d do anything!”
I smiled and passed her a clean napkin. “Don’t worry,” I said soothingly. “I have no doubt you’ll do just fine. You look after me and I’ll look after you, Sally!”
“Look after you?” Sally’s naïve face was creased with puzzlement.
“I have a room booked upstairs,” I confided. “I’d like to get to know you a lot better before you start the accountancy programme.”
Little Sally sat back and said nothing. Her face slowly reddened as the full meaning of my proposition sunk in. “But you’re married. Big Sally!”
“Oh, she won’t mind,” I said with a broad smile. “Trust me on that.” I got up and held her seat out like the gentleman I was at heart. Little Sally now faced a stark choice. She could either come with me or run for the exit, leaving her glittering career respects behind her. She came with me!
