The Byrens’ were the only married couple in the street that had borne no children to inherit Reggie’s accumulated wealth. Nonetheless, the community accepted Marion’s incapability of bearing children as simply another luxury and blessing for her. The other women complained of the bother of having to find nurses and nannies of class and etiquette suitable enough to raise their spoilt, snobby children into spoilt, snobby adults like themselves. And so Marion was envied by the Hedgethorn women for her supposed life of luxury, free from the nuisance of children.
The Hedgethorn men, however, envied the reputation and status that Reggie had built and carefully maintained for himself. His place and position in employment had escalated over a short period of time, and sooner than he had thought, Reggie had found himself in an executive position at the firm he worked for. A man hardly seen, never heard of in the neighborhood banter or caught up in any scandalous adultery, Reggie had kept himself well out of the prying eye of the neighborhood – but, little did they know.
