“The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair was first published in 1906. Through this novel the author has depicted the severely harsh conditions in the lives of immigrants in Chicago, the United States, and how they were exploited in most of the big industrialized cities.

Sinclair exposed several health violations and unsanitary practices in the meat packaging industry in the United States in the early 20th century. This exposure was taken very seriously by the readers. To write about this topic, Sinclair had done a lot of investigation for a socialist newspaper.

“The Jungle” primarily illustrates the poverty in the lives of the working class. It describes the lack of social support and harsh and unpleasant living and working conditions which resulted in the state of hopelessness in the lives of several workers.

At the same time, the author also describes very deep rooted corruption of the people who were in power.
