Light Within the Shadows chronicles Pnina Granirer’s journey to becoming an internationally respected artist whose profound work is an enduring expression of the search for beauty and spirituality.
During her seventh year, picture making became a consuming passion, that grew even as fascism and anti-Semitism increasingly shadowed her world in Romania of WWII era. The book recounts how the artist navigated wars and upheavals, tense political, cultural, and huge life changes.

This lively and moving memoir is the story of Pnina Granirer’s life as an artist, a wife and a mother. Conceived as a play in three acts, it unfolds from her hometown on the Danube river in Romania, to art school in Jerusalem, Israel, followed by three years spent in the USA and finally arriving in Vancouver. The year spent in Montreal, almost three years in Paris, France, travels to Japan, Spain and Mexico, inform her understanding of the world and is reflected in her art. With incredible determination and resilience, amidst the joys and restrictions of family life, Granirer created a large body of art, ignoring trends and searching for renewal.

Her works are found in museum collections in Canada, Spain, Chile and Israel. In 1993 Granirer co-founded Artists in our Midst, the first Open Studios walk in Vancouver.

In this compelling memoir Granirer shares her successes and failures, addressing issues of dislocation, ‘otherness,’ and the uprooted soul’s wish for permanency and belonging. Beautifully written, told with wry optimism, humour and appreciation for life, Light Within the Shadows gives an inside view of how art is forged and released into the world.

Granirer’s work has been featured in two other books: Her own Trials of Eve (Gaea Press) and Portrait of an Artist by Ted Lindberg (Ronsdale Press).
