Tomas grows up in a conservative Midwest family wondering about his sexual identity. He decides to spend the summer of 1970 hitchhiking and camping in Europe. Along the way he is inspired by people he meets and comes to the conclusion that he is gay. When it is time to return home, Tomas decides to take an offer from an older Portuguese man (Marco) to stay and live in Lisbon. Adjusting to his new life, he is made aware of the resistance group, whose goal is to topple the Salazar regime. Tomas feels an obligation to join forces with the housekeeper (Marta) and Marco to promote an agenda of freedom for Portugal. The Carnation Revolution is a one day success. Tomas also resolves a family conflict between his father and himself. The ensuing liberation is not only personal for Tomas but also a liberation of Portugal from repressive dictatorship.
