It began innocently enough. A press conference at the NYPD. Which led to Halliday. Who might be an outlaw. And now she’s blown Halliday’s operation literally sky high.

It's 1937, and Laura van Duyn, society page reporter for the New York Herald Tribune, wants to be more, she wants to report real news. Which is why she finds herself on her own time attending the press conference called by Detective Hardy. Maybe she can get a story. Oh boy, does she. Soon she's careering through the streets of Brooklyn at the wheel of a police car, pursued by thugs with guns blasting. Along with the Detective's sister, Gertrude, she's corralling criminals for the NYPD. Mixing with the Syrians on Atlantic Avenue. Promoted to the City Desk. And drawing ever closer to Halliday, the mysterious figure at the center of all the action.

The explosion which Laura’s investigations precipitated left her unconscious. Now she is awake, and Halliday has her, is taking her away from all that she knew.

From a Park Avenue penthouse to the grittiest slums of Brooklyn, the Appalachian wilderness to a storm-tossed dirigible high over the Atlantic Ocean, Laura’s adventures lead her into a life she could never have imagined would be possible.
