“There are no Europeans left on the Hill; we should have gone too! Everyone else was evacuated early this morning! We must all go immediately!”

The words came tumbling out.

There was no time to argue; it was now known clearly that the Japanese Army had invaded Malaya and was rapidly making its way southwards. In the surrounding area everyone had fled. There was no traffic, no movement anywhere, just silence.

“Darlings, we are in trouble," Patricia's Mother explained, "but Jesus promised that 'if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven'. So we can ask for the Lord’s help now and know He is hearing us and will answer us.”

As the family prayed together, seven-year old Patricia felt a deep peace. “It’s alright now," she realized, "God is in charge!”

The Second World War and the events that followed shaped Patricia's life as her family travelled from country to country and across three continents. From tigers and bandits to submarines and war camps, the stories of her family highlight the risks, dangers and sufferings experienced in Asia and Africa during that important historical period. Yet we also see how faith in Jesus can guide a family through every trial.

It is my privilege to have known Patsy for over 30 years and to have listened at first hand to her recounting the stories contained now in this thrilling and challenging book. Her testimony to God's provision in so many different ways is recounted so naturally and without exaggeration. She writes as she speaks i.e. full of grace and godliness. Her mothers own personal faith in Jesus shines through, to which is added Patsy's own deep personal faith, in respect to which, she is as St Paul says "an example to all who believe". I thoroughly recommend to all who wish to read about faith in action.

I count it a great privilege to know Patsy both as a friend and as the pastor of her church. But it was only recently that I learned what a remarkable life she has led. Her family have had to face a number of terrifying situations that drove them to their knees, and it was at those moments that Patsy experienced first-hand the power and faithfulness of God. I invite you to read this book in which she recounts the twists and turns of her international adventure. I'm sure that just like me, you will be fascinated by her extraordinary story.

This beautifully written book has been hard to put down. I have read many autobiographies but this one stands out. Whilst a very personal story, the backdrop of World War II and the author's journey of faith bring so many insights on the journey of life that are relevant for us all today.

Many times the family was brought to the edge through separation and the uncertainties of war yet their faith continued to deepen and became the bedrock of their lives. The importance of having parents and grandparents to bring encouragement on the faith-journey of life is very clear; truly knowing Jesus alongside makes all the difference.

It is easy for today's young people to forget the impact of war, the challenge of getting to know one's father again when he returns home bearing the trauma of POW camp, the day to day wondering if he is alive – no electronic communication to bring reassurance!

I can't wait for the sequel that hopefully will be written, telling us of the author's beautiful, God-given ministry over subsequent decades. Reading this book will enrich your life, and I'm sure you will then want to pass it on to others.
