Initially, Charlie Baxter isn’t either a Private investigator or even Charlie Baxter. He’s Charles Bankfield, stuck in a dull IT job in a secondary school, with a gambling habit that is beginning to trouble him.
Things change when he returns home to find three men waiting inside his house. He manages to keep free of them, but is terrified by the experience. When – a few days later – he comes to understand that the men had got not only the wrong house, but the wrong road, he is intrigued. He has to go and visit the house in question.
The intrigue takes him to the house – which is empty – and then on a trail right across the city led by an extraordinary figure called Kris. It isn’t until he has disappeared that Charlie realizes that it was Kris the three men were searching for. It seems a strange coincidence, as Kris had just returned to the city after a long absence. The questions he has to ask are: why did Kris leave, why did he come back and who wants to hurt him?
Without quite realizing it, he has become Charlie Baxter and started his first case, which brings him into contact with the exotic Maya and a whole host of characters who would rather he wasn’t poking his nose where it doesn’t belong. Soon enough, he realises that things are coming to a conclusion and the only question is whether he can work out just what’s happening before his whole world collapses.
