Disarmament has been the main plank of India’s Foreign Policy since independence. However, of all international issues, it is the most pressing as it directly affects country’s capability to protect itself. It cannot be ignored as the future of humanity is at stake! To this end, the book examines India’s role in conciliation and its contribution on this issue. The book discusses establishment of negotia-tion machinery, suspension of nuclear test, proliferation of nuclear weapons, establishment of nuclear free zones, reduction of nuclear and conventional weapons, international control of atomic energy and establishment of international police force. This book explores specific security scenarios that impelled India to oppose the Non Prolifera-tion Treaty (NPT), Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and give nuclear dimension to India’s military power. Finally, bilateral and multilateral treaties in the sphere of arms control and its reduction are examined, followed by controversial Indo-US Deal, 2008 and its impact on India disarmament policy.
