John Stuart Mill made essential contributions to social theory, political theory and political economy. However, he is also an influential contributor to education.

John Mill’s idea about education put a strong influence on the popular education model in the United States today that balances developing the strategic thinking and building know-how sills for livelihood.  He was a proponent of that developing thinking framework should be over building know-how skills in an university. John Mill presented this view about an university in the book as the follows:

“It is not a place of professional education. Universities are not intended to teach the knowledge required to fit men for some special mode of gaining their livelihood. Their object is not to make skilful lawyers, or physicians, or engineers, but capable and cultivated human beings.

Men are men before they are lawyers, or physicians, or merchants, or manufacturers; and if you make them capable and sensible men, they will make themselves capable and sensible lawyers or physicians. What professional men should carry away with them from an University, is not professional knowledge, but that which should direct the use of their professional knowledge, and bring the light of general culture to illuminate the technicalities of a special pursuit.”

At the age of three John Mill was taught Greek. By the age of eight he had read six dialogues of Plato. He had also read a great deal of history in English and had been taught arithmetic, physics and astronomy. At the age of eight he began studying Latin, the works of Euclid, and algebra. Today, John Mill is known as one of the founders of economics and he has been called "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century".
