I was born in 1944, only 81 years after slavery, when segregation was the law of the land, and Black baby boys had a life expectancy of 55 years.  This is the story of my development from Negro to N*GG* to Muslim (or, spiritually, from Christian to Agnostic to Muslim). I, Too, Can Create Light is one of the first (if not the first) memoirs by an African American Muslim convert.  Islam has become an established religion in America within the past 25 years, and this is the unique story of an American Muslim pioneer. The book uses poetry, music, photography, graphics and polished  (sometimes humorous) prose to engross readers in an adventurous, triumphant, spiritual,  love story. The book is also about teaching English for 30 years in L.A.'s inner city, making the Muslim Hajj to Mecca in 1997 with my wife, Anjail, and the trials and tribulations of raising  9 children.
