Dael and Jaes two brothers return from a hunting expedition to discover their parents dead, slaughtered by Kaltan soldiers and their sister, Kar taken captive to be sold as a slave. In the first few chapters the brothers rescue their sister. To do so them must descend a vertical cliff and distract the soldiers guarding the captives. During their rescue they learn of Kaltan's plans to invade the small nation state of Sakol using a newly discovered unknown passage through the Citadel Mountains. The story then recounts their adventures as they flee from their pursuers racing to find the hidden entrance into Sakol in time to warn the inhabitants of the impending attack. In the course of this attempt they ascend a cliff, cross a dangerous, swiftly flowing river, and encounter vicious hounds trained to kill. When Jaes is hurt in an ambush Dael and Kar must leave him moving as swiftly as possible toward the Citadel Mountains hoping to find the entrance. Instead they find renegade Sakol militia men who have betrayed their own land. Captured and about to be executed, they escape with the help of another Sakol scout and his great hunting cat.
Once they find the entrance to the tunnel under the mountains Kar goes on through to find help. Dael stays back with Abal, the Sakol scout who saved their lives to try to prevent an advance Kaltan force from gaining control of the Tunnel entrance. But when the main Kaltan force arrives the captain of this force uses a drug to incite a battle fury in his soldiers giving them strength and endurance far beyond their normal abilities. In the last chapter, vastly outnumbered, Dael and the others await the onslaught of frenzied soldiers. Only at the last minute does victory come when Jaes unexpectedly returns.
The book is a short novel written for younger science fiction and fantasy fans. It is fast paced with many of the chapters ending in suspense. Written originally as the first in series of stories, it includes references to other events and mysteries to catch a reader's interest.
