This part of the series describes the last two years of Tom Appleton (the narrator) and his boyfriend Luke Singleton-Scarborough as undergraduates at the University of Camford. The first year, Tom is left on his own in Camford, as Luke is spending a year as an Erasmus student at the University of Bologna in Italy. Tom's loneliness is prevented by his friendship with his 'fag-hag' Margaret. The boys exchange passionate E-mails and sexy phone-calls. They meet at Christmas in North Yorkshire and at Easter in Nice. Luke is injured in an earthquake and his recovery brings his parents and himself closer to his biological mother, who looks after him on his release from hospital. Tom does well in his third-year exams and starts driving lessons. On Luke's return, the two go to stay with Luke's grandparents. Tom takes his BA degree and after Christmas in their final year, Tom's drunken indiscretion leads to a short period of alienation from Luke. Tom's period of religious search comes to an end with his baptism in the college chapel. Their last academic year ends with both boys getting firsts in their Finals, and they start looking for jobs in Italy. At a family festival to celebrate Luke's grandparents' fortieth wedding anniversary, Tom and Luke, in the presence of all their friends, sign the Civil Partnership register and the following day in a private service make vows of faithfulness to each other before God. Tom gets his MChem degree and they both eventually get fixed up with jobs in the Italian city of Trabizona.
