A head teacher’s work is never done, especially if, like Jane Cowan, you are a victim of your own success. Believing the constant threat of her violent ex-husband is no longer hanging over her, she’s settling into her new life and taking on more responsibilities by assuming the headship at a nearby school.

But all is not plain sailing: with multiple disappearances, mysterious vessels spotted off the coastline and Jane seemingly the target of violence herself, she cannot help but become closely involved with police investigations. And as she tries to figure out what is going on, Jane finds that she has enemies in all kinds of places – enemies who will stop at nothing to get what they want.
