“Why is this even necessary?” Josie asked. She recognized the system Gena was showing her. It was the one she had used to pick Hank and Douglas.

“To keep us happy,” Gena told her. “Happy hucows produce sweeter milk.”

“That’s crazy.”

“It’s true,” she said with a shrug. “If you have an hour until your pumping, let’s go for a walk. It’s a beautiful day outside and I’ll show you the grounds.

“What should I wear?” Josie asked, heading to the closet where she had her scant collection of clothing.

“Nothing…well, shoes,” she said indicating her own practical sandals.

Outside the sun felt wonderful on her skin. Josie was still a bit embarrassed when they encountered other hucows, but not because she was naked. She was already over that and the other hucows were also naked. It was because her body hadn’t fully changed yet and she didn’t compare to the others living and working in the dairy.

“They know I’m new, don’t they?” Josie asked as they passed a hucow walking the opposite way.

“Of course they do, but they were new once as well.”

“I feel out of place.”

“You’ll fit in soon enough.”
