Thirty-five-year-old James Kingman is in uncharted territory. His wife, Megan, and their daughter, Maddie, were killed by a drunk driver, and he is ill-equipped for the messy process of grieving. Preferring not to wallow in self-pity, James tries to escape the reminders of his past by relocating to northern Idaho. At first glance, it appears this coping strategy may be working. A productive rhythm returns to Jamess life as he occupies his mind with a busy work schedule at the Idaho Attorney Generals Office. He finds additional and renewed purpose when he champions the cause of a local minority student brutally attacked by members of a local hate group. Colleagues urge James to proceed with caution in his crusade against a group known for violent tactics. James dismisses their concerns. He has never been one to back down from a good and righteous fight, and he isnt going to start now. Following the loss of his wife and daughter, he simply has nothing to lose. Everything changes when an unforeseen romance with fellow attorney Julie Langdon adds renewed vulnerability to Jamess life. Abducted by the leader of the local supremacist group, Julie becomes a pawn intended to force James to back down from attempts to prosecute the group. Forced to make a decision to abandon a trusting and traumatized coed or risk losing Julie, he is determined to find another solution.
