For 2000 years, a horror has been waiting – starving, hating and utterly insane...

Julie Harrison is a smart, dedicated British university student. Together with her over-protective brother Michael and his jealous girlfriend, she joins a caving trip into Maar’s Maw in the Pennines. However, adventure turns to terror when the team become trapped deep underground – in the lair of an ancient behemoth.

Amid the chaos and panic, Julie finds the courage to lead the survivors. She knows they must work together, to try to evade the beast that now stalks them and to discover a way of escape. Their journey reveals evidence of ancient conflicts and slaughter, and clues to how their hunter was created. As days pass, they become exhausted, sick and hungry. They suffer the harrowing loss of friends to the monstrosity’s ravenous attacks. Hope is ebbing away...

How far will friendship take the survivors? What extremes will their darker sides take them to?
Can anyone escape this subterranean hell and the relentless wrath of the God Of War?

Review by Sefina Hawke for Readers' Favorite:
God Of War by Ian Thompson is a suspense filled novel that will appeal most to an audience made up of a mix of mature young adults and adults who enjoy the idea of being scared out of their minds. God Of War portrays a horror that started back during the Roman occupation when one Gaius Pertinax wanted to find something more, something really special for the gladiators. What he brought about was a horror that still exists in modern times and is found by a group of cavers who are hunted by it.
God Of War will make even the bravest reader quake in their shoes; it is a book best read during the day as reading it at night is likely to give nightmares. God Of War is extremely well written with each scene described in fluent language that transitions beautifully from one scene to the next. Ian Thompson offers multiple perspectives from different time periods and characters to really allow the reader to understand the horror, the events, as well as the characters themselves. Each character was well written; my favorite part was the beginning of the book that focuses on John, Mary, and Melissa. I really felt for all of them and was sadden by the tragedy of their lives. I finished God Of War feeling shaken and a bit worried about nightmares, but that is the mark of a good horror novel. 4/5
