Few stories of supernaturalism will grab readers like this one. Ghosts or spirits of Houlton's founders who reside in Evergreen cemetery appear to two local adolescent boys. The ghosts are not threatening, demonic, gruesome, grizzly, or have any intention of interfering with the teenagers' pursuits. Conversely, the ghosts eagerly interact with the youngsters and respond to all of their questions regarding the growth of their community, hardships suffered by the residents, historical highlights, Houlton war heroes, sports, and the economic prosperity of the residents.
The boys did not initially tell the ghosts why they were rolling around on the mausoleums. They awkwardly explained their motivation for being in the cemetery and their theory for making out with girls using the John Watson Warming method. Readers will learn that Evergreen cemetery is inhabited by the deceased, congenial ghosts, and hormone driven teenagers.
The savvy author developed a creative technique to share insight into the early history of his hometown. He uses a combination of fact and fiction and presents his characters (dead and alive) as breezy and fun. His subtle sense of humor, laid back and homespun writing style, make for easy and enjoyable reading.
