This is a brief timeline of events leading up to WW I, and some events in 1914 as well as nine essays that Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes mysteries) wrote on the subject.

It is amazing to realize how all of the worldwide events fit together, and how they led up to WW I. His timeline has some things that are interesting and tie together some significant events leading up to WW I:

1882 Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy form the Triple Alliance.
1891 France and Russia form an alliance in reaction to the Triple Alliance.
1898 Germany begins to build up its Navy to challenge the long standing British Navy global supremacy.
1902 Japan and Britain form a navy alliance.
1904 Britain and France form a strategic agreement to be activated by war.
May 1905 newly industrialized Japan defeats Russia at sea.
February 1906 HMS Dreadnought is launched, the first of the all big gun ships, making all earlier ships obsolete overnight.
1907 Britain reaches a strategic agreement with Russia.
1908 / 09 Austria Hungry annexes Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Balkans and and Germany forces Russia to accept the annexation. 1912 / 13 two Balkan wars evicting the Ottoman empire from Europe, and rearranging the country boundaries.
1914 Archduke Ferdinand of Austria Hungry is murdered in the Balkans, and WW I starts in August.

In the first essay, he attributes the cause of WW I as due to Germany being intoxicated with her success in war (1871 Franco German War) and jealousy of the British Empire. Britain was concerned about the German naval building program which she saw as a challenge. This essay was used to explain Britain's position to Denmark and Netherlands as well as others.

In the second essay, Doyle confesses that he was one of those who did not believe that Germany had an evil intents until about a year before WW I, when he came to understand the threat from Germany.

Interesting collection of essays from 1914 reflecting the times at the start of WW I.
