This article (11,000 words, 25 Photos) discusses our four day trip to Budapest. We present a day-by-day account of our activities. Our impressions, key facts, a selection of photos, relevant opening times, entrance fees, and references and resources are provided for each of these activities. We visited Budapest during December so it was very cold and the flora was not at its best. Nevertheless our visit was most enjoyable.
This visit to Budapest presented the first opportunity for us to walk along the banks of the Danube past the three famous bridges. The other highlights included a visit to the Great Market Hall with plenty of fresh and cooked produce, and arts and crafts; a confronting and thought provoking visit to the House of Terror; a most enjoyable presentation of the Nutcracker at the National Opera House; an outstanding, albeit too short, classical concert at Stephen’s Basilica; and an interesting walk along the full length of Andrássy Avenue to the Millennium Monument.
Budapest has come a long way over the past two decades having shaken off the effects of the oppressive regimes from 1939 to 1990. It is emerging as a chic modern city rich in culture and heritage.
If the chance to visit Budapest presents itself, take it, you won’t be disappointed.
