The United States and Soviet Union, allies during WWII, found themselves in what became known as the Cold War which lasted over 40 years. The U S believed the Soviets were trying to take over the world with Communism. Both had nuclear weapons of mass destruction and both relied on a strategy of massive retaliation to prevent war. You bomb us and we bomb you.

In 1959 the Cold War turned into a heated war and the Communists launched Intercontinental Ballistic Weapons aimed at U. S. targets. The President of the United States ordered release of U. S. weapons against Communists targets. It was the beginning of WWIII.

Aboard the U S S Bon Homme Richard, CVA 31. the Skipper calls General Quarters. LTJG Bobby Smith, USN and the Smith crew of three naval aviators are chosen to deliver a nuclear weapon against a Chinese target. They will fly at night “under the radar” at 100 ft. to get to the target where they will deliver an atomic bomb which is five times the power of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima to end WWII. The Smith aircraft is a single engine propeller driven AD5N Attack plane. No one is certain that it can get far enough away from the blast to survive even if they make it through Communist defenses. This is the story of the flight briefing and delivery of the weapon to its target in China. No one knows if the Smith crew will return to the ship again.
