Philip is the captain of the baseball team at his high school and the star pitcher. His family doesn’t have much money, so he’s depending on getting an athletic scholarship for college. He is a good student except for math, where he’s doing poorly. His coach warns him that unless he pulls up his math grade he’ll be off the team.
The principal of Philip’s high school arranges a math tutor for him. Much to Philip’s dismay the tutor is Arthur, a fellow student. Arthur, a top student, apparently has no interest in athletics, but that’s not what bothers Philip the most. Arthur has never said he’s gay, but everyone assumes it, and Philip, following his father’s lead, is quite homophobic. He really, really doesn’t want to have anything to do with Arthur, but he has to accept the tutoring or be off the team.
Working with Arthur, getting to know him, is an eye opener for Philip. He and Arthur become close friends, but Philip can’t handle their growing intimacy. His homophobia takes over, with unexpected results …
