Bob Shepherd is the workaholic accountant of Birch Woods Nursing Home in Neumann, Connecticut. He’s at the end of his rope. One of his few friends is dying. It looks as if his boss is about to fire him. And Bob’s wife, Sylvia, pregnant with their third child, is thinking about divorce. Kevin Moore, the newly appointed priest at St. Catherine’s Catholic church in Neumann, has already established himself as a strong presence in the community. Dreaming of greatness, Kevin wants to believe the strange symptoms he’s been experiencing are a sign from the divine. Tom Ryan, the pastor of the church, is worried that his assistant is letting his ego get the better of him. Rudy Samson is the elderly caretaker of Mills Park—just across the street from St. Catherine’s church. He tries to hide himself away in his stone shed, but there is no escaping his shame. Rudy even keeps his closest friend, Lem Harris, at a distance. Forty-five years earlier, Rudy left his wife for an affair that cost him his only son.
